The town was first known as Liberty, but in 1923 the post office requested that they rename the town because they "were overrun with Liberty towns". The town was named Latuda after the mine developer Frank Latuda. In 1927 several avalances came down the steep canyon walls in one day killing some people and wiping out a row of houses.
